Join Dr. Sandra Cammarata and Dr. Giovanni Campanile as they interview Admiral Richard Childs, M.D., a Clinical Director at the NIH Institute who is also known for being appointed as Assistant United States Surgeon General Rear Admiral (2nd star-Upper Half) Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service. Professional Accomplishments
Senior investigator at the NHLBI for more than 25 years conducting first-in-human research in the field of experimental allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and tumor immunotherapy. First investigator to establish the existence of a graft-vs-solid tumor effect in metastatic kidney cancer. This pioneering research led to the discovery of human endogenous retroviruses being targets for immunotherapy in kidney cancer.
Has served for more than 10 years as NHLBI's Clinical Director during which time he completely revamped NHLBI’s clinical research infrastructure assisting the ability of DIR researchers to conduct high-risk translational research.
Has served in multiple major leadership roles in Corps deployments including serving as the Chief Medical Officer for the Ebola Crisis Response in 2014/2015 in Liberia, West Africa, commanding the strike team sent to Tokyo Japan in February 2020 to rescue Americans on the Diamond Princess infected with COVID-19, Commanding Operation Artemis, the largest Unaccompanied Children mission in our nation’s history, and most recently serving as the Interim Director of Commissioned Corps Headquarters, where he directed day-to-day operations for more than 6,000 active duty U.S. Public Health Service Officers. 
Rear Admiral Childs is one of the most highly decorated active-duty officers in the U.S. Public Health Service, having received the Distinguished Service Medal with Valor, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Assistant Secretary of Health’s Exceptional Service Medal, and the Humanitarian Service and Global Health Award.
Was elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the NIH Director’s Scientific Medal Award, the NIH Clinical Center’s Distinguished Clinical Teacher Award, the American College of Physicians (ACP) National Award for Outstanding Work in Science as Related to Medicine.
